Weaving the Semantics

Participants: Katerina Giannopoulou,

“Weaving Semiotics” attempts to reconstruct the multidimensional relationships between symbols, language, and landscape, examining how the cultural and linguistic representations of a community can evolve and be reconfigured over time. Here, language and cultural symbols are treated as active elements of a living ecosystem. Through a dialectical approach, the work highlights the way in which the local traditions of Nisyros, collective memories, and social changes form a “tapestry” that encompasses and transcends the boundaries of place.

In this context, each symbol—whether a stone or a word—embodies enduring yet fluid meanings, intertwined with history and social reality. Symbolic displacement, therefore, is not static but is redefined according to the values and needs of each period. Similarly, the collective dimension of semiotics reveals the dynamics of cultural interaction, where communities take an active role in the creation and recognition of symbols. Thus, these elements become tools for the reconstruction of identity and cultural heritage, offering new perspectives and meanings that contribute to the formation of a collective cultural dialogue, resulting in a new dimension of memory.
